Hanoi Zoo

In the north of Vietnam in the capital city Hanoi there is also a zoo.

The sign at the entrance means "The garden of Hanoi." Near the entrance there is a large map of the Zoo which shows that some of the animals are kept in enclosures around a lake and also in cages on a strip of land that goes into the lake.

There are many trees and flowers, a picnic area where children can play and a large Chinese Temple that has a life size horse statue in front of it.

They have many animals and birds on display. Some are native to Vietnam and others are from different countries. There are bears, lions and tigers and different species of monkey. Some of the enclosures have been rebuilt recently. In the monkey enclosure there are ropes and tyres for them to swing on.

Most of the animals are in traditional cages, but the elephants which are housed on the edge of the lake have a big open space with plenty of shelter.

There are pens where chickens and domestic sheep are displayed. These sheep are kept at the Zoo because they are not native to Vietnam.

Most of the signs in the Zoo are in Vietnamese, English and French. The sign on the tiger's cage is in English. It tells that this tiger was taken from people who caught it in the jungle to sell for food and its skin. The tiger was put in the Zoo and a competition held to name it. The winning name "Lam Nhi", which means 'baby of the forest', was chosen from more than 10,000 names suggested by school children.

Hanoi Zoo has an aquarium which has marine animals such as turtles and fish on display.
