HISTORY

Although not documented, tradition has it that in the late 1840's a tent was set up near the river and used as a school for the Catholic children of the district. Father Geoghegan and Archdeacon Downing also celebrated Mass there.

27.12.1852 The land bounded by Moreland, Hopkins, Whitehall and Wingfield streets was ‘temporarily’ reserved for a church, clergyman's residence and school.
28.10.1862 The land was permanently reserved.  Foundation stone of first stage of St Monica’s Church laid by Dr Goold, Archbishop of Melbourne.
05.05.1874 The First Mass was celebrated by Fr McGillicuddy in St Monica’s Church.
12.12.1885 Dr. Goold blessed the completed second stage of the Church
23.03.1890 St Monica’s was made a Mission separate from Williamstown.
16.11.1950 Dr. Mannix consecrated the Church and marble altar.

In 1964 the Church was extended, the ‘side chapel’ was added.

The Church was renovated in 1977.

The Present

St Monica’s Church is the oldest Catholic Church in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne.  However, the actual parish is now one of the smallest – the boundaries being the Maribyrnong River, Ballarat Road, Geelong Road, Victoria Street, Walter Street (Yarraville) and Lyons Street.

Like the suburb of Footscray itself, the parish which once comprised a large residential area now consists of commercial and industrial properties and car parks and a very small resident population.
